Welcome

"The weakest and oldest among us can become some sort of athlete, but only the strongest can survive as spectators. Only the hardiest can withstand the perils of inertia, inactivity, and immobility."

--- J. H. Bland and S. M. Cooper, Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism (1984)

Photo of healthy senior coupleAdvocates for Active Aging, LLC, serves to inform, inspire, and involve individuals of all ages and physical abilities in a variety of fitness and non-fitness based (educational) activities for the purpose of enhancing functional fitness or the ability to perform everyday activities in a more efficient and safe manner.

Our bodies were made to move. Unfortunately, much of the deterioration experienced by the human body is due to a lack of proper movement. What we consider to be “normal aging” in our society today is not solely due to age itself, but due to a lack of regular and proper movement. We must train to age. There is sufficient evidence to support both sides of the physical activity coin. Individuals who remain active are healthier and happier than those who are not. This is true for all ages and conditions. Not moving enough can even cause or worsen illness. The human body is amazingly resilient and with proper training and time can become stronger and more flexible.

The results of the 2014 United States of Aging Survey are in! This year, Older Americans are taking more proactive steps to improve their health, like exercising daily and setting health goals. For many seniors, high activity levels correspond to a positive perspective on life. Seniors who exercise daily are much more likely, than those who never exercise, to say the past year of their life has been better than normal rather than worse. Other key points of the survey related to regular physical activity include:

  • More optimism about the ability to maintain a high quality of life.
  • More optimistic that health will improve.
  • Seniors are most likely to say that their motivation to stay or get healthy comes from themselves.
